About Little Eva PlantationIn the heart of Louisiana lies an area now known as Little Eva Plantation. Legend has it that Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, visited central Louisiana in the late 1840's and fell in love with the area. It is told she went back north and began writing. In 1852 her book was published. Eva is the little girl Uncle Tom saves from drowning in the book, thus this area was named Little Eva Plantation. About Louisiana Pecans1989-1990 - We moved to Little Eva Plantation. We learned everything we could about pecans and pecan trees and set out to thin the orchard by taking out every other tree. This was no easy job, since the trees were in the range of 30 years old! This left us with somewhere in the neighborhood of 1800 trees to fertilize, prune, spray and generally pamper. 1992 - On a very small scale, we decided it was time to venture out into the "mail-order" world, so we began marketing our 2lb Gift Tin of pecan halves. With the support of family and friends, we had a successful year and have been doing mail-order pecans year round ever since. We also have a retail pecan and gift shop during harvest time which coincides perfectly with the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. 1999 - This year brought us a set back in May. Our barn that housed all of our pecan supplies, cold storage, and the location of our retail pecan and gift shop (plus a lot of farm stuff) burned down. It took the wind out of our sails, but once we regrouped and got a plan of direction, we were off and running again. In reflecting back, it was a lot of hard work which is still not complete (is it ever finished?). Out of a bad experience came something good. Because we needed another building to house our business, we started checking our options -- to build in the orchard or move to town? From our need came an opportunity to acquire a historic train depot that originally served Natchez, La. It had been sitting dormant for years waiting for someone to discover it again. We moved it to the site of our original barn in July 1999 and have been renovating it ever since. The closest we can tell, our depot was built somewhere between 1880 - 1904. There aren't many of these little depots left. We're proud of our "little jewel" and would love to share it and our history with you along with delicious pecan and gourmet pecan candy samples. We open the last weekend in October thru December from 9:00am to 5:00 pm Monday-Saturday and Sunday from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Come see us! |
